ePUB (Electronic PUBlication) est le format ouvert et standardisé pour les livres électroniques.
Les fichiers ePUB sont reconnaissables à leur extension .epub.
Proposé par l'International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF), le format est basé sur les standards XHTML et CSS. Il est conçu pour faciliter la lecture sur tablette et ordinateur, le texte étant ajusté dynamiquement en fonction de la taille de l'écran. Il peut être lu sur iPad et iPhone avec l'application iBooks, sur les eReaders à technologie d'encre numérique (sauf Kindle), sur les tablettes et smartphones Androïd avec une application de lecture, et sur les ordinateurs (Mac et PC) avec des logiciels gratuits comme Adobe Digital Editions.
Le standard actuel ePUB version 2 va être progressivement être remplacé par la version 3 compatible HTML5 et CSS3.
Kindle est le format propriétaire de lecture des livres numériques proposé par Amazon.

PDF (Portable Document Format) est un format propriétaire de la société Adobe.
Un fichier PDF est reconnaissable à son extension .pdf.
Il garantit la portabilité et préserve la mise en page du livre telle qu'elle a été définie par son auteur, quelque soit le matériel ou le logiciel de lecture utilisé. Il peut être lu sur toutes les plateformes avec les logiciels gratuits Adobe Acrobat Reader ou Adobe Digital Editions. Il est recommandé pour les ordinateurs ou tablettes disposant d'un écran assez grand, ou pour imprimer les documents. Il est déconseillé pour un lecteur de livres numériques, le format ne permettant pas une adaptation dynamique des pages à la taille de l'écran.
Les livres édités et publiés par Science eBook ne contiennent aucun système contraignant de DRM (Digital Rights Management).
